RAIL BLUE REMEMBERED

Diesels In The Ownership Of British Rail During The 1970s

WESTERN CLASS DIESEL No.D1058 'Western Nobleman'

The Last Winter Of Service For 'Western Nobleman.' Seen Here Leaving Westbury For Plymouth Late In 1976. A Week Or Two After This Photograph Was Taken, D1058 Was Withdrawn And Scrapped At Swindon.

CLASS 25/3 DIESEL No. 25311

The Main Line Passenger Diesels Had Given Way To Electric Traction On The West Coast Main Line But The Dogs-Body Duties Were Still The Responsibility Of Lesser Machines. Here A 25 Has Stopped At Tring To Drop Off A Member Of Staff, Possibly A Guard Acting As Pilotman.

CLASS 31/1 DIESEL No. 31181

Once Steam Classes N2 And L1 Tank Engines Did All The Suburban Passenger, Shunting, And Empty Stock Business Around Kings Cross, But With Their Demise, Came The Class 31s To Take Over And Make These Duties Their Own, Becoming As Familiar As Their Erstwhile Predecessors.

CLASS 33/2 CROMPTON DIESEL

A 'Crompton' Slimliner On The Former GWR Birmingham Main Line. This Daily Train From The Cement Works At Chinnor In Deepest Buckinghamshire, Was A Regular Working For This Class Of Locomotive. She Is Seen Here Passing Not 50 Yards From My Home At The Time, In Micklefield, High Wycombe.

CLASS 37 DIESEL No. 37054

37054 Of March Depot, Awaiting His Next Turn Of Duty At Liverpool Street Station In The Late 1970s. 37s Were Extensively Used Alongside Class 47s For Hauling Former Great Eastern Main Line Trains To And From This Famous London Terminus. Back In The Last Decade Or So Of Steam, Gleaming Britannia Class Pacifics Were Used Exclusively On All The Top Turns, With Class B1s And B2/B17s Hauling The Remainder. However Class K3s Could Also Be Seen On Occasion.

CLASS 40 DIESEL No. 40155
The Massive Proportions Of This First Generation British Diesel Locomotive Are Well Displayed In This Portrait Of 40155, Stopped With His Freight Train In Lancashire, After Having Expired On The Road. Later He Was Towed Away In Disgrace, And Replaced By A Classmate Which Then Proceeded To Take The Train Onwards Towards The South.

CLASS 45/1 'PEAK' DIESEL No. 45122

Like The Jubilees Before Them The Peaks Were Synonymous With St. Pancras, Being Employed Almost Exclusively On The Midland Main Line Expresses, Supplimented With Type 47s On Occasion. Also First Generation Diesels, They Were Sleeker Than The More Angular Type 40, And Rather Handsome Machines When All Said And Done, (Also Just Like The Jubilees Before Them.)
